Department of Mechanical Engineering, Yogananda College of Engineering and Technology (YCET) conducted an industrial visit of 8thsemester students, at Chenab Bridge(Highest Railway Bridge in World), Kauri, Reasi &Salal Hydroelectric Power Station (NHPC), Jyotipuram, Reasi on friday 20th May 2022. During the visit, the students were briefedabout the making of Chenab Rail Bridge using steel and concrete with the shape of an arch when completed, the Bridge will span the Chenab River at a height of 359m(1,178 ft) above the river, making it the world’s highest rail bridge . The base support stands completed and construction of arch is also completed. The design & Construction is carried out by Afcons infrastructure, Shapoorji Pallonji group with the help of IISc Bangalore & DRDO. Major construction decisions are taken by Konkan Railway Corporation. Two pylons were erected on either side of the river& two auxillary self- propelled cables cranes. This was used to support the partly finished arch parts & finally the girder is now constructed as a horizontal platform.
The second part of the visit was arranged in Salal Hydropower Station that is the run–of–the–river hydropower project on river Chenab built by National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). The UT of J&K receives 12.5% of the energy generated from the project and the rest is transmitted to the Northern Grid. The total capacity of the plant is 690MW comprising of stage 1(345MW)&stage II(345MW).The turbines used in the plant are Francis type turbines. The industrial visit was an amazing experience, provided the right exposure and proved to be a definite value addition in their professional knowledge. Industrial visit to an organization of repute is must for practical insight and understanding. The management of JGEI congratulated the department for such initiative and urged that such visit should be a continuous practice. Er.B.R.Verma, Chief co-ordinator YCET & Er.Dinesh Gupta , Dean academics also complimented the department for such visit. Er.Neeraj Pandita accompanied the students to the visit.
